Spring Magic!

Spring Magic!

This is one of my favorites! A flower company coined these planters “Spring Magic” and “Fall Magic”. Spring Magic and Fall Magic is the use of plants that can take cooler temperature and still look fantastic. I like to talk people into doing them before Easter or around that time and doing them again in the fall after frost. Having a few of these planters will brighten up Easter and spring without the worry of cold hurting the plants.

Putting together a mix of plants in a pot is a lot more fun than putting a single variety like pansies in a pot. You get a wildflower look. In the early spring, when shade isn’t as important, you can put sun and shade together, water loving plants with xeric plants.

You use perennials and cold weather annuals like pansies and violas in pots. The pots can be planted around Easter with perennials like columbine, saxifrage, English daisy, coralbells, sedum, sweet woodruff, dianthus, scabiosa, pansies, violas, gaillardia, shasta daisy, thyme, chives, kale, chard, snow in the summer and many others.

Enjoy the planters for a few months, until it is time to plant petunias and marigolds, then take the perennials out of the planter and plant them in the appropriate spot in your yard.

I’m not saying you have to spend a bunch of money and do all your planters but do a few at the entrance to your house or a few on the back patio where you hang out. When shopping for these plants don’t buy big. Look for plants that are in a 4-5 inch pot. Use a rock or two in the container and have the plants grow around the rocks.

Enjoy and have some spring fun. You might not replant them with petunias and marigolds. You might just enjoy them all summer long.
